Pirate costumes are as popular as ever, but why? What is it about these scurvy sea-dogs that make us “arrgh” with such delight?

Of course, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has brought the glamorous side to piracy back in spectacular fashion. Who wouldn’t want to be as funny, charming or handsome as Captain Jack Sparrow? The real Blackbeard was born Edward Teach around 1680; allegedly in Bristol. His ship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge was legitimately used to prey on enemy French and Spanish vessels, before the Queen’s war ended. It was only then did Blackbeard (who did have thick black beard) begin to go rogue from the monarchy and carry out attacks off the coasts of New Providence, Barbados and St Vincent.

His piracy ‘career’ was short, lasting just two years between 1717-1718 but during this time his image carried a fearful presence. Stories tell of lit fuses tied under his hat to scare the enemy away. His look inspired many of the costumes we see today.

He reportedly wasn’t a violent man though, contrary to popular fiction. Blackbeard in fact, stole by force and was actively supported by his 400-strong crew, but even they couldn’t stop the inevitable.

In the November of 1718, Royal Navy Lieutenant Robert Maynard of the HMS Pearl was given permission to command two ships and take Blackbeard out. They met at the southern end of Ocracoke Island in Hyde County, North Carolina and Blackbeard was ambushed when he attempted to sneak on-board Maynard’s ship.

He was outnumbered three-to-one and Maynard himself shot Blackbeard before he was set upon by the other crew members. Maynard celebrated the defeat by removing the pirate’s head and suspending it from the bow.

Gruesome, yes. Maybe our infatuation with the movie pirate is for reasons of pure escapism. The pirates that we like to remember had the most fun, wore the best clothes and always lived to fight again. They have been romanticised in a way which sometimes is far removed from the truth, but we love them for it. This is exactly why pirate costumes will stick around for a long time to come.
